Solution focused therapy – with Jeff Chang, July 7-10, Calgary (CANCELLED)

In this four-day workshop, Dr. Jeff Chang, PhD will present a comprehensive, practice-oriented introduction to Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. You will learn the assumptions of the SF approach, which underlie the processes and attitudes of SFBT. Jeff will demonstrate how to expertly sequence and phrase SF questions, teach you how to both pace and invite clients’ motivation, develop homework tasks that clients will carry out, and know when to refrain from assigning them. Participants will also learn how to track progress, plan for termination, and prevent relapse. Jeff will reserve time for participants’ goals and topics of interests. Most importantly, Jeff will go beyond the techniques and procedures of SFBT to kindle SF attitudinal postures and help participants develop a solution-focused ear for openings.

Dr. Jeff Chang was exposed to the solution focused approach almost 30 years ago when he first read Steve de Shazer’s Keys to Solution in Brief Therapy in 1985. He later trained with de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg at the Brief Family Therapy Centre in Milwaukee. In 1987, Jeff hosted Michael White, and subsequently trained with him at various North American venues.
As a trainer, Jeff brings more to the table than technical expertise in these approaches. He understands the history, development, and philosophy underlying these approaches, and developed and taught the first graduate credit courses in western Canada in the 1990s. As an experienced counsellor educator, Jeff knows how to assist aspiring counsellors to acquire the skills, gain fluency with the ideas, and integrate them into their practice.

Jeff is Associate Professor in the Graduate Centre for Applied Psychology at Athabasca University, Director of the Family Psychology Centre, and a clinical supervisor at Calgary Family Therapy Centre. He is a Registered Psychologist in Alberta, and an Approved Supervisor and Clinical Fellow of the American Associated for Marriage and Family Therapy.
