Cody Guy House, Psy.D.

Associate (Teaching) Faculty in Counselling (Edmonton)

I am a Registered Psychologist in the province of Alberta and work full-time providing treatment and assessment services to Canadian Veterans, active duty members of the Canadian Forces, and RCMP Officers.  I also maintain a small private practice in Edmonton.  I earned my doctorate at the Arizona School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University Phoenix and completed specialized training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for a mood, anxiety, trauma, and sleep disorders.  I have taught at City University since 2015, primarily at the Counselling Psychology Theory Course.  My clinical interests include case formulation-driven CBT, treatment of insomnia and other sleep disorders; anxiety and trauma-related disorders, and evidence-based practice.

Research

My research interests including mechanisms of change in psychological therapies in naturalistic clinical settings, factors impacting adherence and engagement in psychotherapy, case formulation driven CBT, insomnia, and veteran mental health.

Teaching

My main goal in teaching is to help students translate theory into practice.  To that end, I employ empirically supported teaching methods as well as broad principles of adult learning relevant to the training of emerging counselling professionals.  In the classroom, I combine didactic, experiential, and active methods, supplementing lecture with video review; skills teaching via demonstration, practice, and feedback; and in-class exercises translating theoretical concepts into specific conceptualization skills using “case study” materials informed by real-world clinical practice.  I value collaboration and enjoy teaching, mentorship, and watching students learn and grow into their emerging professional roles.
