Fern Ashton, M.A.

Associate Faculty, Master of Counselling (Edmonton)

My name is Fern Ashton and I hold a Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology (CityU Alumnus). I have 25 years of experience in the counselling field in many diverse settings, including treatment facilities and educational settings. Currently, I work as a Registered Psychologist in private practice at a clinic which specializes in complex PTSD.

As a trauma specialist, I have supported individuals through diverse life experiences, including traumatic exposures (childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, grief and loss, depression, and anxiety) for more than 25 years. Through a client centered lens of support and encouragement, I have worked with individuals in varying stages of life span, including children, youth, adults and seniors. I value the courage, commitment, and authenticity each client brings to the table and am honored to be a part of that healing journey. I believe in the ability to heal and approach my client interactions with love, support, and humor.

My passion lies in building hope and helping individuals develop healthy wellness strategies of their own. I have extensive experience working with diverse cultures, genders, religions, and sexual orientations.

In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, reading, and watching movies. Travel is a passion of mine as I believe the world is really a small place and we are all connected!

Research

My previous research area (thesis) was focused on the middle-aged stage of development and a sense of belonging. Currently, my interests are in the area of shame and how one might utilize today’s technology to facilitate less stigma with shame, but am not formally enrolled in any current research projects, yet.

Teaching

I believe in lifelong learning and that no learning is ever “lost”. I also believe my role is to help facilitate student driven learning based on theory, education, training, and experiences. I have taught with CityU Edmonton since 2016 and enjoy teaching Mixed Mode courses. It is very rewarding to become a part of CityU student’s learning team and watch the evolution of highly efficient clinicians in my field.

Courses

My teaching experience includes: co-teaching Group Counselling (CPC 527) in Edmonton, Child & Adolescent Counselling (CPC 600) and Mixed Mode Practicum courses (CPC 654 and 655).
