Associate Director/Internship Coordinator
As an Associate Director, I work with faculty and CityU staff on implementing the delivery of the Master of Counselling programs. I have been working at CityU since 2017, where I teach courses in theory and practice, as well as oversee the administration of the Comprehensive Examinations and Internship training.
I have a background in the Arts (Theatre) and for much of the past 30 years have maintained a Psychotherapy practice counselling individuals, couples, and families. I also conduct workshop trainings to educate the public about mental health, the impact of stigma and the importance of its reduction in society. I have been teaching Psychology at the undergraduate and graduate level for 15 years.
About to embark on the completion of my doctoral studies, my research aim is to broaden our understanding of the aging process with respect to the hidden opportunities for growth and self-discovery inherent in moving through the latter part of one’s life journey. Contrary to much societal discourse around the diminishing role and relevance of the elderly, I hope to illuminate the aspects of aging that are exciting, inspiring and valuable at a time when advanced age is becoming more a reality.
My teaching philosophy follows directly from my praxis, in that the learnings I have acquired from journeying with my clients are directly applied in my teaching of theory and practice. Whether we are exploring the power of therapeutic presence, the key elements to working effectively with clients, the question of how to apply theory to practice, or how to deepen self-reflexivity in our work, I believe students are best served by being encouraged in their curiosity, challenged in their discomfort, and inspired to be their best. These principles find their way into my teaching and in the ways I support students during their clinical training while in the program.
