Before your departure to Canada

Before you board your flight to Canada, ensure you completed the steps listed under Preparing for your departure.

To board a flight to Canada, you must also:

  1. Demonstrate to the airline that you are exempt from the travel restrictions by showing documents which establish you are travelling to Canada for an essential reason (e.g., proof of in-person (F2F) classes) and
    • you’re an international student who has a valid study permit or
    • you were approved for a study permit on or before March 18, 2020, or
    • you’re coming from the United States

The onus is on you to prove your travel to Canada is essential and non-discretionary.

  2. Show a passport that is valid to fly to Canada and a valid entry document (visitor visa or eTA, if required).
  3. Complete a health check with airline officials, to confirm you do not have symptoms of COVID-19, including a fever, a cough, or difficulty breathing.
  4. Depending on the airline, there may be additional requirements for travel, including wearing a face mask or covering. Confirm with the airline or any connecting airports prior to your flight.

You will not be permitted to board an airplane to Canada if you:

  • Show any symptoms of COVID-19 or
  • Have been refused boarding in the past 14 days due to a medical reason related to COVID-19 or
  • Are subject to a provincial or local public health order.
