Gulnara Omar receives Presidents recognition at 2018 Commencement

We were thrilled to see Master of Counselling graduate Gulnara Omar receive recognition from City University of Seattle President Randy Frisch at the 2018 Commencement ceremony in Seattle this year. Randy noted how many students may start a degree, but what sets CityU graduates apart is their determination to complete their studies. He told of the challenges Gulnara faced as an outstanding example of this determination.

Gulnara started her Master of Counselling studies in 2008 in Calgary while working as a Executive Coach. After completing two years of study, for family reasons she found herself having to leave Canada. While abroad, her mortgaged home in Calgary sustained damage during a terrible flood which could not be adequately covered by insurance. To pay off the mortgage and recover from the financial loss, Gulnara accepted a position in executive coaching in Dubai. She continued to pursue her studies at a distance, encouraged by Maika and Angelica in Vancouver, whenever times were tough and it all seemed to much. Her story of graduating 10 years after she started her degree, facing adversity along the way, is a true testament to the power of persistence, aided by the support of our caring CityU Canada faculty, administration and community in Canada.

Congratulations Gulnara! We are proud of you.
